Volkswagen and IBM deploy RFID technology to achieve intelligence

IBM recently announced that it is working with Volkswagen Group (the largest automaker in Europe) to realize the intelligent management of Volkswagen's auto parts supply chain through sensor technology.

The new RFID system can greatly improve the daily operational efficiency of the car, for example in the automotive parts and accessories phase. Volkswagen is planning to introduce the technology at its logistics center in the main automotive plant area in Germany.
Volkswagen plans to launch a one-year RFID system trial plan, and Volkswagen and IBM will work with suppliers to test RFID technology. It is planned to gradually put RFID tags on containers with auto parts. These containers are shipped to the Volkswagen plant area.

Kurt Rindle, head of global sensor solutions at IBM, said, "The trial plan has broken ground. Volkswagen leads the way in technological innovation and strives to be the first car manufacturer to adopt RFID technology. Deploy RFID systems to suppliers to transport cars. From the parts to the production line, the whole process is tracked."

Containers with RFID tags are automatically read by reading devices deployed at the core site in the supply chain. First, from the supplier's transportation department, to the transportation, to the Volkswagen company, to inventory, collection and installation to the automotive assembly line. Throughout the process, auto parts and containers are all in the spotlight. When Volkswagen returns the empty container to the supplier, the above process is repeated to ensure that all containers are properly returned after receiving the auto parts. The technology also reduces the use of paper documents and barcode labels.

Klaus Hardy Mühleck, chief information officer and IT director of the Volkswagen Group, said, "The long-term goal of Volkswagen is to build a comprehensive, paperless production and logistics chain throughout the group. The trial of RFID systems shows that we can at a lower cost. , confidently integrate RFID technology into business processes."

To test RFID technology, Volkswagen has attached passive RFID tags to more than 3,000 containers, provided by Intermec Technologies. The technology has been improved so that it is also suitable for metal containers, which often interfere with the proper functioning of RFID technology. Passive RFID tags are used to track containers carrying the Volkswagen Golf sunroof, from the reading device at the entrance to the mobile handheld scanner and forklift for the production line to determine the container and loading contents.

The RFID system uses IBM technology, including IBM's Global Technology Services RFID container management solution and IBM's WebSphere Premises server (application-independent RFID middleware).
